gunkspace
gunk (ɡʌŋk), n., a viscous, sticky residue; mess or dirt; an accumulation of overlooked matter.
Gunkspace is a research collective that investigates experimental urban infrastructures.
We trace the metabolic flows of soil, water, food, waste, and everyday care practices to examine the complex interconnections between planetary urbanization processes, extra-human agencies, and the labor of social reproduction, attending to their uneven histories, legacies, and temporal dynamics.
We work across disciplines—urbanism, ecology, geography—through various media including peer-reviewed articles, video essays, and architectural assemblages.
Our collaborators include institutions like universities, municipalities and cultural organizations, as well as individual activists, artists and community leaders.
All outputs of the research process are open source. Below is a list of some of our ongoing projects.
