gunkspace
gunk (ɡʌŋk), n., a viscous, sticky residue; mess or dirt; an accumulation of overlooked matter.
Gunkspace is a research collective that investigates experimental urban infrastructures. We trace the metabolic flows of soil, water, food, and waste to examine the complex interconnections between planetary urbanization processes, extra-human agencies, and eco-hydrological dynamics.
We work across disciplines—urbanism, ecology, geography—through various media including peer-reviewed articles, video essays, and architectural assemblages. Our projects and fieldwork range in scale from installations to biomes, and span geographies across Europe, the Americas, and Asia.
Our collaborators include institutions like universities, municipalities and cultural organizations, as well as individual activists, artists and community leaders.
All outputs of the research process are open source. Below is a list of some of our ongoing projects.
